Adapting the translated Scriptures to lyrics and music poses extraordinary challenges: irregular scansion, wide emotional dynamics, and wooden diction are just a few. The challenges are so great, in fact, that most self-aware musicians can’t muster the necessary courage to even dare an attempt. Yet Psallos’s “Romans” seems to turn the weaknesses of adaptation into its strengths—an ever-adapting adaptation that manages to both communicate and illuminate Paul’s epistle.
